Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 ¾ cups hot water

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. This helps the cobbler bake evenly from the start. Lightly grease your baking dish so nothing sticks. I like using butter for extra flavor and richness.

Add the Melted Butter

  • Pour the melted butter directly into the baking dish. Spread it gently so it covers the bottom evenly. Do not mix it with anything yet. This butter layer creates a rich base during baking.

Mix the Wet Ingredients

  • In a bowl, add the milk and vanilla extract. Whisk them together until smooth and well combined. This mixture smells sweet and comforting already. Set it aside while preparing the dry ingredients.

Combine the Dry Ingredients

  • In another bowl, mix flour, white sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Stir well so the cinnamon spreads evenly. This step is important for even flavor. Make sure there are no dry lumps.

Make the Batter

  • Slowly pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick but easy to pour. Avoid overmixing to keep the cobbler soft.

Pour Batter Over Butter

  • Carefully pour the batter over the melted butter in the dish. Do not stir the layers together. This may look strange, but it is correct. The layers bake into magic.

Add the Brown Sugar Layer

  • Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the batter. This layer adds deep sweetness and moisture. It melts during baking and creates a caramel-like sauce underneath. Spread it gently with a spoon.

Pour the Hot Water

  • Slowly pour hot water over the entire dish. Do not stir at all. The water helps create the gooey base while baking. It will disappear into the cobbler.

Bake the Cobbler

  • Place the dish carefully into the oven. Bake for about 40 minutes. The top should look golden and slightly cracked. The center should be soft but not runny.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it rest for ten minutes. This helps it set slightly. Serve it warm for the best taste. A scoop of vanilla ice cream makes it even better.

Notes

  • Use heavy cream instead of milk for a richer cobbler.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for deeper spice flavor.
  • Reduce sugar slightly if you prefer less sweetness.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Add chopped nuts on top for extra texture.
