Ingredients

  • 5 –6 apples peeled and halved
  • 100 g sugar
  • 75 g unsalted butter
  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Juice of half a lemon

Instructions

Prepare the Apples

  • Peel and core the apples. Cut them into halves. Toss them in lemon juice to prevent browning.

Make the Caramel

  • Place sugar in an oven-safe pan. Heat gently until it melts and turns golden. Add butter carefully and stir until smooth.

Add Apples to Pan

  • Arrange the apple halves in the caramel. Place them tightly together for even cooking and a beautiful pattern.

Cook the Apples

  • Cook the apples in caramel for about 10 minutes. They will soften slightly and absorb the rich flavor.

Add Pastry on Top

  • Roll out the puff pastry and place it over the apples. Tuck the edges inside the pan neatly.

Bake the Tart

  • Transfer the pan to a preheated oven at 190°C. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the pastry is golden and crisp.

Cool Slightly

  • Remove the pan from the oven. Let it cool for a few minutes. This helps the caramel settle slightly.

Flip the Tarte Tatin

  • Place a plate over the pan. Carefully flip it upside down. Lift the pan slowly to reveal the caramelized apples.

Serve Warm

  • Serve the tart warm. Enjoy the soft apples with crisp pastry and rich caramel flavor.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith
  • Do not burn the caramel
  • Keep the apples tightly packed
  • Add cinnamon for extra warmth
  • Use pears instead of apples
  • Serve with whipped cream or ice cream
