Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar or honey
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease your loaf tin lightly. This helps prevent sticking later.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, add both flours, oats, seeds, salt, sugar and baking soda. Mix well using a spoon.

Add Buttermilk

  • Pour buttermilk slowly into the dry mixture. Stir gently until everything combines into a thick batter.

Check the Texture

  • The batter should be soft but not runny. If too dry, add a little more buttermilk.

Fill the Tin

  • Transfer the batter into the prepared loaf tin. Spread evenly using the back of a spoon.

Add Topping

  • Sprinkle extra oats or seeds on top. This gives a nice look and crunch.

Bake the Loaf

  • Place the tin in the oven. Bake for about 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown.

Check Doneness

  • Insert a knife or skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, the bread is ready.

Cool the Bread

  • Remove from the oven and let it cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a rack.

Slice and Serve

  • Slice once cooled slightly. Enjoy warm with butter or your favorite spread.
