Ingredients

  • 6 slices white bread
  • 3 slices cooked ham
  • 150 g grated cheese Gruyère or cheddar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 300 ml milk
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Sauce

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and stir well. Slowly pour in milk while whisking. Cook until thick and smooth, making a creamy white sauce.

Add Cheese and Flavor

  • Add half of the grated cheese into the sauce. Stir until melted. Mix in mustard, salt and pepper. This creates a rich and flavorful topping.

Toast the Bread Lightly

  • Lightly toast the bread slices in a pan or toaster. This helps the bread stay firm when layered with sauce and filling.

Assemble the Sandwich

  • Place ham and a little cheese between two slices of bread. Press gently. Repeat for remaining slices to make sandwiches.

Add Sauce on Top

  • Place sandwiches on a baking tray. Spread the prepared sauce evenly on top of each sandwich. Make sure the top is fully covered.

Add Final Cheese Layer

  • Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of the sauce. This will melt and create a golden crust during baking.

Bake Until Golden

  • Place the tray in a preheated oven at 200°C. Bake for about 10–12 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling.

Serve Hot

  • Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Cut into halves or quarters and serve warm. Enjoy the crispy outside and creamy inside.

Notes

  • Use thick bread slices for better texture
  • Add a fried egg on top for Croque Madame
  • Use different cheeses for variety
  • Add herbs like thyme for extra flavor
  • Toast bread lightly to avoid sogginess
  • Use smoked ham for deeper taste
