Ingredients

For the Beef Filling:

  • 400 g ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 cup canned chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the White Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

For Assembly:

  • 12 cannelloni tubes
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Cook the Beef

  • Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook for one minute. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Stir often.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

  • Add chopped tomatoes and tomato paste to the beef. Stir well. Add oregano, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 10 minutes. The mixture should thicken slightly.

Prepare the White Sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and stir for one minute. Slowly add milk while whisking. Cook until thick and smooth. Add salt and nutmeg.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease your baking dish. This prevents sticking and helps easy serving later.

Fill the Cannelloni Tubes

  • Spoon the beef mixture into the cannelloni tubes. You can use a small spoon or piping bag. Fill carefully but do not overstuff.

Arrange in Baking Dish

  • Place filled cannelloni in a single layer inside the baking dish. Make sure they are close but not squashed together.

Pour the Sauce

  • Pour the white sauce evenly over the cannelloni. Make sure all pasta is covered. This keeps the pasta soft while baking.

Add Cheese Topping

  • Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top. The cheese will melt and create a golden crust.

Bake the Dish

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes. The top should be golden and bubbling. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Add spinach to the beef filling for extra nutrition.
  • Use ricotta cheese mixed with beef for a creamy twist.
  • Replace beef with ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Let the dish rest before slicing for cleaner servings.
