Ingredients

For the meat sauce:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the cheese layer:

  • 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

For assembly:

  • 9 lasagna noodles
  • Extra mozzarella for topping

Instructions

Cook the Lasagna Noodles

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add lasagna noodles carefully. Cook according to package instructions. Stir gently to prevent sticking. Drain and lay flat on parchment paper.

Prepare the Meat Sauce

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Break it into small pieces. Add chopped onion and garlic. Cook until soft and fragrant. Stir in marinara sauce and herbs.

Simmer the Sauce

  • Reduce the heat to low. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes. This step builds flavor. Stir occasionally. Add salt and pepper as needed.

Make the Cheese Mixture

  • In a bowl, combine ricotta, egg and Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and creamy. This mixture creates soft, rich layers inside the lasagna.

Preheat and Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. This prevents sticking.

Start Layering

  • Place three noodles over the sauce. Spread ricotta mixture on top. Add meat sauce evenly. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers two more times.

Add the Final Cheese Layer

  • Finish with noodles and remaining sauce. Sprinkle generous mozzarella on top. This will melt and create a golden crust.

Bake the Lasagna

  • Cover the dish with foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 to 20 minutes more. The top should be bubbly and lightly golden.

Let It Rest

  • Remove from the oven. Let it rest for 15 minutes. This step helps the layers set. Slicing will be easier and cleaner.

Notes

  • Use Italian sausage instead of ground beef.
  • Add spinach to the ricotta mixture.
  • Use fresh basil for brighter flavor.
  • Try whole wheat noodles for extra fiber.
  • Add a layer of roasted vegetables.
  • Use béchamel sauce for a creamy twist.
