Ingredients

  • 450 g fresh cranberries
  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 120 ml orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon optional
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Rinse the Cranberries

  • Rinse cranberries under cold water. Remove any stems or damaged berries. Clean cranberries cook evenly and create smooth sauce.

Combine Ingredients in Saucepan

  • In a medium saucepan, add cranberries, sugar and orange juice. Stir to combine. This ensures sugar dissolves evenly while cooking.

Add Orange Zest and Cinnamon

  • Add orange zest and a pinch of cinnamon. Stir gently. The zest adds brightness, and cinnamon adds warmth. These small touches enhance the flavor beautifully.

Cook the Sauce

  • Place saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes. Cranberries will pop and soften.

Stir and Check Consistency

  • Stir sauce occasionally. Mash some cranberries gently with the back of a spoon. Simmer until slightly thickened. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon.

Cool Before Serving

  • Remove saucepan from heat. Let sauce cool slightly before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Transfer to a bowl or serving dish.

Store Leftovers

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Use within 5–7 days. Reheat gently if needed or serve cold.

Notes

  • Use fresh cranberries for best flavor, but frozen also works.
  • Add a splash of Grand Marnier or brandy for a festive twist.
  • Adjust sugar to taste for sweeter or tarter sauce.
  • Mix in chopped apple or pear for extra texture.
  • Zest lemon instead of orange for a citrusy variation.
