Ingredients

For the Mince:

  • 500 g ground beef mince
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cold butter
  • 4 –5 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley optional

Instructions

Brown the Mince

  • Heat oil in a large pan. Add ground beef. Cook on medium heat. Break it apart with spoon. Cook until brown. Remove extra fat if needed.

Add the Vegetables

  • Add chopped onion and carrots. Cook for five minutes. Stir often. The onion should become soft and slightly golden. This builds flavor.

Make the Gravy

  • Add tomato paste and thyme. Stir well. Pour beef stock and Worcestershire sauce. Add salt and pepper. Bring to gentle boil. Lower heat and simmer for twenty minutes.

Add the Peas

  • Stir in frozen peas. Cook for five more minutes. The gravy should thicken slightly. If too thin, simmer a bit longer.

Prepare the Dumpling Dough

  • In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Add cold butter. Rub with fingers until crumbly. Add cold water slowly. Mix gently until soft dough forms.

Shape the Dumplings

  • Divide dough into small balls. Keep them equal size. Do not press too hard. They should stay light and fluffy.

Cook the Dumplings

  • Place dumplings on top of simmering mince. Cover with lid. Cook for twenty minutes. Do not lift the lid while cooking. Steam makes them soft.

Check and Serve

  • The dumplings should rise and look fluffy. Insert toothpick to check. Serve hot with extra gravy. Enjoy every warm spoonful.

Notes

  • Use fresh herbs for stronger flavor.
  • Add mushrooms for extra richness.
  • Use half beef and half lamb mince.
  • Add a splash of red wine for deeper taste.
  • Keep lid closed while dumplings cook.
  • Do not overmix dumpling dough.
