Ingredients
  

For the beef filling:

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 700 g potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 50 g butter
  • 100 ml milk
  • Salt to taste

For garnish:

  • Fresh parsley chopped

Instructions
  

Prepare Potatoes

  • Peel and chop potatoes. Place them in boiling water. Cook until soft, about 15 minutes.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Drain potatoes. Add butter and milk. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt.

Heat Oil in Pan

  • Add olive oil to a frying pan. Heat on medium until shimmering.

Cook Onions and Garlic

  • Add onions and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until soft and fragrant.

Add Carrots

  • Stir in diced carrots. Cook for 5 minutes until slightly tender.

Cook Beef

  • Add minced beef. Break it with a spoon. Cook until browned evenly.

Add Tomato Paste and Worcestershire

  • Stir in tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 2 minutes to combine flavors.

Add Stock and Thyme

  • Pour in beef stock and add thyme leaves. Simmer for 10–12 minutes until thickened.

Season the Filling

  • Add salt and pepper to taste. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Preheat Oven

  • Set oven to 200°C (400°F).

Assemble the Pie

  • Transfer beef mixture to a baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes evenly on top.

Create Texture

  • Use a fork to make small ridges on mashed potato. This makes a golden crust.

Bake the Pie

  • Place in the oven. Bake 20–25 minutes until top is golden and slightly crisp.

Garnish and Serve

  • Sprinkle fresh parsley on top. Serve hot with steamed vegetables or salad.

  • Use a mix of beef and lamb for richer flavor.
  • Add frozen peas to the filling for extra veggies.
  • Sprinkle grated cheddar on top before baking for cheesy topping.
