Ingredients

  • Gai lan Chinese broccoli – 300g
  • Water – for boiling
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon

For the sauce:

  • Oyster sauce – 2 tablespoons
  • Soy sauce – 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar – 1 teaspoon
  • Sesame oil – 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic – 2 cloves minced
  • Vegetable oil – 1 tablespoon

Instructions

Wash and Prepare the Gai Lan

  • Rinse the gai lan under clean water. Trim the ends of the stems. If stems are thick, slice them in half lengthwise. This helps them cook evenly and stay tender.

Boil the Water

  • Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Add a little salt. This helps keep the greens bright and fresh during cooking.

Blanch the Gai Lan

  • Place the gai lan into the boiling water. Cook for 2–3 minutes until tender but still crisp. Do not overcook. Remove quickly and drain using a strainer.

Cool the Vegetables

  • You can rinse the cooked gai lan with cold water. This stops the cooking process. It also keeps the green color bright and fresh.

Arrange on Plate

  • Place the cooked gai lan neatly on a serving plate. Keep the stems aligned for a clean and simple presentation.

Prepare the Sauce

  • Heat oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Add oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar and sesame oil. Stir well until the sauce is smooth.

Pour the Sauce

  • Pour the warm sauce evenly over the gai lan. Make sure it covers the stems and leaves. The sauce adds rich flavor to the simple greens.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve immediately while warm. This dish tastes best fresh. Enjoy it as a side with rice or other main dishes.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the gai lan to keep it crisp
  • Add ginger for extra flavor
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce for a healthier option
  • Drizzle chili oil for a spicy twist
  • Try adding mushrooms for variation
  • Use fresh garlic for the best taste
