Ingredients

  • Tomato sauce – 2 cups
  • Tomato paste – 2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Onion powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Sugar – 1½ tablespoons
  • Dried oregano – 1 teaspoon
  • Dried basil – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – ¾ teaspoon
  • Black pepper – ¼ teaspoon
  • Water – ¼ cup

Instructions

Heat the Oil

  • Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add olive oil. Let it warm gently. Do not let it smoke.

Add Tomato Base

  • Pour tomato sauce and tomato paste into the pan. Stir well until smooth and combined.

Add Water Slowly

  • Add water a little at a time. Stir after each pour. This keeps the sauce smooth.

Add Dry Spices

  • Sprinkle onion powder, garlic powder, oregano and basil. Stir until evenly mixed.

Sweeten the Sauce

  • Add sugar to the sauce. Stir well. This gives that classic Chef Boyardee taste.

Season It

  • Add salt and black pepper. Taste the sauce. Adjust seasoning if needed.

Simmer Gently

  • Lower the heat. Let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes. Stir every few minutes.

Blend for Smoothness

  • Turn off heat. Blend the sauce until very smooth. This step is optional but recommended.

Cool the Sauce

  • Let the sauce cool completely. This helps flavors settle nicely.

Store or Use

  • Use right away or store in a clean jar. Your sauce is ready.

Notes

  • Use canned San Marzano tomatoes for richer taste.
  • Add a pinch of paprika for light warmth.
  • Reduce sugar if you like less sweetness.
  • Add a splash of milk for creamier texture.
  • Simmer longer for deeper flavor.
